He died at the home of Mr. Piet Martins of Nieu- Bethesda. This is the same house that was later transformed by Piet Martin’s daughter, Helen, into what is known today as the Owl House. After the deaths of her parents she stayed on in the house, and when she was in her late 40s or early 50s she started altering the interior of the house until almost every square inch was transformed into artworks. People from all over the world have visited the Owl House to see the eccentric artworks on display.

  "A regular visitor to the school, especially on a Saturday afternoon to watch the cricket, was a dear old character, Uncle Gibbon Joseph. He was a wonderful story-teller."

He had to work hard to achieve this and eventually buy his own farm, Mossievale, on the banks of the Milk River, Petersburg. He served his apprenticeship on the lands of the McNaughton family. Later, he became life-long friends with Donald Hartzenberg from whom he bought the land on which Mossievale was established.
